Top 5 Spring Cleaning Ideas

Tomorrow is the first day of Spring. At least that is what my calendar says. If you’re watching the weather channel, it might be spring with some snow in the North East. There is nothing we can do about the weather, but what comes inevitably with Spring, is Spring Cleaning. A friend of mine told me that she and her sisters picked up a fierce habit, from their mother, of spring cleaning through every single room and all their belongings. Every year, they now do the same. Spring cleaning scares me a bit. We somehow collect things unintentionally through the year, so a whole house cleaning could be overwhelming.

I have adopted and held on to two philosophies: (1) only buy what you need and not what you want; and (2) if you indulge in what you want, get rid of the duplicates you already have.

Instead of a full house purge, here are a few tips of what I have done in the past, and what I plan to add this year.

Rule #1. Always put on some music first. Queue up your favorite dance tracks, or whatever keeps your inner dancing queen energized!

Rule #2. Keep some fresh lemon water at hand. If you’re low on hydration, you might not be as productive as you’d like. So keep sipping as you go about your efforts – worst case, it’ll keep you moving as you run to the bathroom. J

Rule #3. Possibly the most important rule: have fun and enjoy yourself. De-cluttering our space of material possessions can have a wonderful effect on our outlook.

With these rules in mind, here’s a plan of attack that you can use and customize to your heart’s content:

  1. Sweaters/dresses: Weed out what you know you didn’t wear this past winter, and what you don’t think you’ll wear this coming summer. I’m sure someone else can benefit from them. Our tastes evolve over time, so we shouldn’t be afraid to get rid of things that are out of synch with who we are now.
  2. Make-up and nail polish: Last season’s color might not be this one’s, and cosmetics expire much sooner than we are done with them. If you’re not sure, check the expiration – the small icon of a tub with a number in it should give you an idea. For instance, mascaras are only good for 3-4 months!
  3. Holiday pantry items: If you were like me and bought extra pumpkin, peppermint or molasses to bake for the holidays, it’s time to move on to spring flavors like lemon, raspberry and lavender. If the holiday items have a long shelf life, I’ll be donating my excess to a food pantry.
  4. Nightstand: This is probably not so specific for spring, but a corner of a drawer in my nightstand is filled with holiday gift receipts, which are definitely no use to anyone. Out they go!
  5. Books: I love reading and have quite a few books on hand at any given time, depending on how I am feeling. Sometimes they’re just for décor or to match the space’s color scheme (shh!), but this is a good time to start pulling out books and bagging them for donation. Your local library will usually collect books in decent condition to sell during their fundraising events. Or, you can always swap them with friends or family and start your own lending network.

I’m optimistic for a refreshing spring ahead – hope you are too. If you have any other spring cleaning tips that you swear by, I’d love to hear from you in the comments below!

Top 3 lessons from #NYCVFF2015

We had an exciting weekend at the 5th Annual New York City Vegetarian Food Festival. We live close enough to the city, but with two-day passes, who wants to go back and forth? We arrived on Friday night, relaxed and enjoyed what the city had to offer. Saturday morning, we were energized and ready to rack up our steps weaving the aisles of the Metropolitan Pavilion.

The Festival had over 125 different vendors! We were grazing from booth to booth. Kudos to the organizers for not putting all the chocolate vendors in a single aisle – that would have been the most crowded! I don’t know about you, but I love some good, quality chocolate.

Aside from the food, we also attended cooking demos and talks. Who knew that the laws of Physics could be questioned – you can produce something by stirring together a bunch of nothings! There were some impressive cheese vendors who will be on my shopping list. Below are my top 3 take away lessons from the NYC VFF.

Please add your own thoughts in the comments below!

  1. Chances are, if you’ve ever craved some wild combination, so have your fellow vegans. We had some very creative foods. Flavors you never thought would go together, or could be created from purely plant-based ingredients! Everything from “faux” gras, to hot sauce, and cheddar “cheese”. It’s getting easier to eat plant-based when your vices are also available in a vegan variety. I will have to wait patiently for them to be stocked in my local natural foods store.
  2. There has always been media coverage about non-vegetarian food and how it is produced, but what about vegetarian food? In the north-east region, we can only be locavores in the summer by picking up our groceries from our local farmers market. What about in the winter? It’s hard to eat local when your region is popular for producing snow. There are times when you want something a little faster. What about processed foods and pre-packed snacks? Sometimes you don’t want to make your own burgers or chocolate bars. Are you sure you know how to read the packaging? Does the packaging even tell you where the ingredients are sourced from and the impact on the environment? I, for one, will be looking out for ways to make sure that my fork is voting for companies who are responsible to the environment and the people involved in the production.
  3. I started on my journey of a plant-based diet to be healthier. I feel better, my body loves me more and I can sleep better at night. I was raised an ovo-lacto-vegetarian. Before you know it, lactose intolerance and pondering the chicken-or-the-egg mystery landed me in my current state. Sometimes, it is harder to give up the familiar comfortable cravings because we give ourselves so much stress. How we face our challenges is really about what we value and what our goals are. The health talks (by Dr. Rob Ostfeld, and others) were intriguing, filled with medical research validating what our bodies already feel. There was a fascinating talk about adherence to a plant-based diet, which lead to some late night perusing on plantbasedresearch.org and www.nutritionfacts.org. We all know that if you set yourself up for success, it will be yours. I’m armed with all kinds of facts to remind myself that what I crave is a healthy body, full of energy. I plan on keeping my body running clean and fueling up on energy so that I can follow my passion.

The flax and chia provide the smoothie with a thickness, you wont miss any of the dairy in this vegan smoothie. While the pear is blended, the firm and fibrous grit still remains. Can you see the little white flecks? It is not the same as juicing, the texture feels like you are chewing and eating, not just drinking.  A satisfying start to my day!
